Privacy Policy

Effective Date: 16 July 2026

String is an iOS application operated by Stuart Watson ("I", "me", or "my"). This policy explains what information String handles and why.

1. Information String handles

Content stored on your device

String stores your video clips, audio, captions, clip dates, settings, and finished videos locally on your device. String does not upload your clips, audio, captions, or filenames to me or to PostHog.

This content may be included in iCloud or other device backups, depending on your Apple settings. Apple handles those backups under its own terms and privacy policy.

Analytics

When Share usage analytics is enabled in String's Privacy settings, String sends limited, pseudonymous information to PostHog to help improve the app. This may include:

  • a pseudonymous installation identifier;
  • app launches and other lifecycle information;
  • limited device, operating-system, and app-version information;
  • general onboarding choices;
  • clip counts and durations; and
  • export, sharing, and App Store review-prompt events.

Analytics does not include your name, email address, clips, audio, captions, filenames, or support-message content. IP-address capture, session replay, surveys, automatic screen-view capture, and automatic element-interaction capture are disabled. Analytics is not used for advertising or cross-app tracking.

Support

If you contact support, I receive the information you choose to send, including your email address, message, and attachments.

String can attach a diagnostic report to a support email. You can review or remove it before sending. The report may include your device model and name, iOS version, locale, time zone, app settings, clip counts and dates, storage information, and recent app logs. It does not include your clips, audio, or captions.

2. How information is used

Information is used to:

  • provide and improve String;
  • understand general app usage and diagnose technical problems;
  • respond to support requests;
  • process content when you choose to save or share it; and
  • protect the app, users, and my legal rights.

I do not sell, rent, or use information for targeted advertising or unrelated commercial purposes.

3. Permissions and sharing

String requests camera and microphone access so you can record clips. It requests add-only Photos access when you choose to save a finished video; it does not read your existing photo library. Device motion is used locally for an in-app visual effect. Reminders are scheduled locally through Apple's notification system.

When you choose to save or share a finished video, it is provided to the destination you select, which may include Apple Photos, Apple's share sheet, Instagram Stories, or another app. That service handles the content under its own terms and privacy policy.

String uses PostHog Cloud for analytics. PostHog processes analytics information in the United States. See PostHog's Privacy Policy.

4. Retention and deletion

  • Analytics information is retained for up to 12 months and then deleted under the PostHog project settings.
  • Support emails and diagnostic attachments are normally deleted within 90 days, unless a longer period is needed for an ongoing issue, legal compliance, or legal claims.
  • Clips and related local app data remain on your device until you delete them or uninstall String. Copies in Apple backups or content you have shared with another service may remain under that service's controls.
  • Temporary export files and recent local diagnostic logs are periodically cleaned up by String.

5. Your choices and privacy requests

You can enable or disable future analytics collection at any time using Share usage analytics in String's Privacy settings. You can also manage camera, microphone, Photos, and notification permissions in iOS Settings.

Depending on where you live, you may have rights to request access to, correction of, deletion of, or a copy of personal information held about you. To make a privacy request or complaint, email support@updraftstudio.ai with the subject String privacy request. I may need to verify your request. Because analytics is pseudonymous and String has no user accounts, I may not always be able to identify a particular analytics record.

If you are in Australia and are not satisfied with my response, you may be able to contact the Office of the Australian Information Commissioner.

6. Children

String is intended for a general audience and is not directed to children. I do not knowingly collect personal information from children in a way prohibited by applicable law. Contact me if you believe a child has sent personal information so I can investigate and delete it where appropriate.

7. Changes

I may update this policy when String's features, service providers, or legal obligations change. Updates will be posted at the privacy-policy URL with a new effective date.
